All the efforts of the city council could not change the fact that the Bijlmer has become a ghetto for Surinamers. Built in the seventies this big residential area was at the time considered modern. Unfortunately, by the time it was finnished, Suriname got its independance. Before that, Suriname was a colony of the Netherlands. Things did not turn out good and it was decided that the Kingdom of the Netherlands should enter in a different relationship with its colony. Not all the inhabitants felt the same, and a lot of them went abroad to live in the Netherlands. These refugees were all placed in the same area: the Bijlmer.
The Bijlmer became Little-Suriname and went from one problem to the next. By the turn of the century, the Bijlmer is the poorest, most criminal neighbourhood to live in. For most parts it is a dangerous place to be. There's also a big Setite presence.
