De Bazel

E-mail Print PDF

This monument has been built in the rich twenties of the 20th century. The building was built as a bank: the Nederlandse Handel Maatschappij. In some ways, the NHM is what was left of the Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie (VOC) after its demise. The NHM is now the ABN/AMRO, but Elvis has left the building: it's empty now. De Bazel is going to be renovated to be used as regional archive for the city of Amsterdam.
On top of the building, a mansion has been built in later times. One cannot see it from the outside. The only way to get there is by private elevator. The mansion itself consists of nine separate rooms: eight around the central vault. It featured in Ashes to ashes part 2.
