No, this story didn't end. However, it proved exceedingly difficult to get everyone to write for this site. Something had to be done. Just to make it easier, I stopped nagging everybody about this site, and as a result, no stories were written. In the meantime, we played on. Another big problem had to be tackled: it proved impossible to use the dark age chronicles in a modern setting, primarily due to the high levels of player knowledge about the world of darkness canon. I could change the names, I could change the places, but still most players knew what it was all really about.
Second, I wanted it to be a chronicle of ages. All the things described in books like the Transsylvania chronicles or the Giovanni chronicles get a lot more interesting if you play them right. Also, if I got the players through the ages, that gave me the chance to let them see the history unfold in their game. I used to think that the feeling of mystery I want to invoke in my games couldn't be reached in that kind of game, but I was wrong.
So, here's what I did: I took the players back in time. And they hated it. I had to endure hours of complaints about the loss of backgrounds and the changes I made to their character sheets. Now that I write this, this storm has tempered and I think everyone is ok with the setting.
I still don't know it was a good decision, but it gave me a chance of doing something else with the game. The coterie of Lucius is now travelling through Italy of around 1400, on their way to the Low Countries. In every town they come across a different kind of problem or setting, so they can quickly come into contact with a lot of Cainites and establish a name for themselves.
But what about the name Holland by Night. The story has digressed far from the standpoint of Amsterdam and Haarlem. While I still think these cities should be the center of the campaign, it is also up to the players. Holland by Night now only refers to the players, not to the world they're playing in.
